The challenges of Job Hunting
Staying motivated with a job hunter state of mind
1. The job search
Many people I speak to tell me the same thing; the effort to job hunting is demoralising. So much time and effort is put into tailoring the perfect CV and cover letter, so much preparation is done for the interview, much of the time for nothing more than a rejection. If this is repeated the disappointment and effort can be emotionally draining for anyone! So why do it?
If you approach the job search with a clear sense of what motivates you, the chances of success not only increases, but you can more readily approach each day with a sense of optimism and clarity.
2. Personal motivation
Your motivation is special and unique to you. No one can invalidate or deny what motivates you. With each individual I find a wealth of inspiration from their drive and reasons behind this drive. Crucial for success, however, is a self awareness and honesty when acknowledging your motivations. There is no wrong motivation as long as it’s your honest motivation. What more money? Prestige? What a nicer working environment or a more fulfilling job? Once you have identified your reason for job hunting, the effort of job hunting becomes much more manageable.
How do you identify your motivations? A mixture of introspection and verbal dialogue with a trusted friend or professional can do wonders for discovering your drivers and finding the purpose behind your job hunt, propelling you forward in your job hunt.
3. Clarity on goals
Once your motivations have been identified, the next fundamental element to your job search is setting clearly defined goals. Systematically identifying what you want to realistically achieve gives you a clearer idea of what to do and gives a greater sense of accomplishment during the job hunt process, which is critical for maintaining strong levels motivation and enthusiasm even in the face of rejections. Disappointments and rejection are an inevitable part of the job hunt, so preparing for this with a positive and realistic attitude is essential.
4. Attitude
Let’s talk more about attitude, because in job hunting the right attitude is very important. There are certain qualities which can be cultivated that will not only help in your job hunt but also in your life beyond. The few I am going to highlight here are key to successful applicants and can be built up with the help of professional coaching. These are optimism, perseverance, and confidence.
My advice for anyone looking for jobs is to cultivate a positive mind set. Optimism is an invaluable tool and will serve you well in any endeavour, especially one that comes with inevitable set backs and disappointments.
Perseverance and the ability to bounce back also make up a key segment of skill needed to achieve in the job market. Failure and repeated set backs shouldn’t keep you down, and should be seen as opportunities for growth and learning.
Finally confidence and self belief are other qualities which can be developed and used to achieve the goals you’ve set yourself.
